Council is pleased to be completing the renewal of Hamilton’s entrance signage, celebrating community identity and cultural heritage.
For many years, stone town signs have welcomed residents and visitors along Ballarat Road, Coleraine Road, and Portland Road. The time has now come to replace these signs with new designs that reflect both community vision and cultural values.
Background
In 2019, Council shared initial concept designs for the entrance signs and received an overwhelming response, with more than 1,500 community members providing feedback. This valuable input prompted a pause, rethink, and redesign of the project.
Since then, Council has carefully considered community perspectives, as well as insights gathered during the Council Plan engagement process and placemaking workshops, to ensure the new signage reflects local vision for the township, the heritage and character, connection and the priorities of the community.
The renewed designs incorporate key elements identified through community consultation, including:
Strong visibility of the Hamilton name
Authentic Indigenous representation
Use of local materials
Simplified design and integrated lighting
A strategic approach to interpretative signage into the future.
Design
The new signage base will use local stone to reflect the Grampians’ landscapes, with timber and corten steel evoking the Shire’s agricultural heritage. Two stones beside the steel symbolise history - one natural stone for First Nations heritage and one cut stone for European settlement. Gunditjmara language, strongly supported in consultation, has been incorporated through close collaboration with Gunditjmirring Corporation to ensure accuracy and respect.
Standing at 1.5 metre high and 4 metres wide, the sign concept has been approved by Department of Transport (DTP), noting three will be located near existing signs and two will be in new locations. The existing signs will be removed, with the bluestone retained for reuse.
We'd love to get your thoughts on the design - click below to share your feedback. Consultation closes 6 February 2026.
