Draft Onsite Wastewater Management Plan 2026-2031

Council invites residents to provide feedback on the Draft Onsite Wastewater Management Plan 2026-2031, with community consultation open until 27 September 2026.

What's an onsite wastewater system?

If your property isn't connected to a town sewer system, wastewater from your home is treated and managed on your property through an onsite wastewater system (often called a septic system).

What is Council proposing?

The new Onsite Wastewater Management Plan (2026-2031) replaces the previous plan developed in 2019 to help Council and property owners better manage septic tanks and other onsite wastewater systems.

Why are we considering this change?

The draft plan outlines how Council and the community can manage and reduce risks associated with onsite wastewater systems, including septic tanks and other treatment systems used on properties that are not connected to sewerage. This draft plan is about protecting our environment, supporting sustainable development and ensuring wastewater is managed safely now and into the future.

What won't change?

All onsite wastewater systems will still need to meet relevant regulations and standards.

Council will continue to assess applications and ensure systems are suitable for the property and surrounding environment.

We're seeking feedback from residents, property owners, plumbers, builders and anyone who may be affected by the proposed changes.

Your feedback will help Council understand community views before any changes are considered.

A hard copy of the draft plan along with a simple FAQ can be viewed in person at Brown Street Customer Service or the Hamilton Library.
